Tomorrow (January 20) our nation celebrates a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was not only an advocate for equality of African Americans, but also was an advocate for the equality of every human being. We pray that the vision and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. may inspire Christians to work for equality among all members of society.
On Wednesday, January 22, we mark the 41st anniversary of the infamous Supreme Court decisions Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton which made abortion legal in the United States for all nine months of pregnancy. Since those decisions legalizing abortion in our country more than 55 million innocents have been killed. The Catholic bishops of the United States have designated January 22 as a special day of prayer and penance in reparation for the massive killing that resulted from the Supreme Court decisions.
You are invited to St. Anthony’s Church on Wednesday, January 22 to pray for an end to abortion. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be from 12 to 3 PM and the Mass for Life will be celebrated at 6:30 PM followed by the praying of the rosary.
The Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25) is also being observed during this week. The late Pope, Blessed John Paul II – soon to be St. John Paul – in his encyclical, “Ut Unum Sint” (That All May Be One) called for ecumenical collaboration in the works of justice and human rights. Pray for a deeper union among all Christians.
